The Iphone 14 Series: Celebrating 15 Years of the Iphone Transition

 


     Okay before we begin the review of this year's Iphone series, we want to celebrate 15 years of the Iphone transformation. So in honour of Apple, we have this remarkable clip we will like you to watch. Now before you watch this, you might be wondering why this clip is so remarkable. Here's why? On June 29, 2007, the very first Iphone went on sale. On that same day, a boy named Noah was born. Over the next 15 years, the Iphone grew and so did Noah. So without further ado, check out the clip: 



     The Iphone 14 and 14 Plus




       The Iphone 14 and 14 Plus are smartphones designed, developed and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the sixteenth generation of Iphones suceeding the Iphone 13 and 13 Mini and were announced at the Far Out Event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California on September 7, 2022 alongside the 14 Pro and Pro Max flagships. 

Design - The Iphone 14 and 14 Plus features a 6.1 inch(15cm) and 6.7 inch (17cm) display, improvements to the rear facing camera and satelite connectivity. Both phones have an identical design to the Iphone 13 although the physical sim tray is removed for the U.S models. The Iphone 14 and 14 Plus are available in five colors: Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight and Product Red. Purple is a new color used on the Iphone 13 and 13 Mini.

Hardware - Iphone 14 and 14 Plus are available in three internal storage configurations: 128, 256 and 512GB. It has 6GB of RAM, an increase over the Iphone 13 and 13 Mini models 4GB of RAM. The Iphone 14 and 14 Plus have the same IP68 rating for dust and water resistance as its predecessor. The Iphone 14 and 14 Plus are equipped with the Apple A15 Bionic system on a chip(SoC), the same variant used on the 2021 Iphone 13 and 13 Pro Max. The Iphone 14 and 14 Plus feature a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU and 16-core Neutral Engine.

Display - The Iphone 14 features a 6.1 inch (155m) display with Super Retina XDR OLED technology at a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels and a pixel density of about 460ppi with a refresh rate of 60Hz. The Iphone 14 Plus features a 6.7 inch (170mm) display with the same technology at a resolution of 2778 x 1284 pixels and a pixel density of about 458ppi. Both models have typical brightness of up to 800 nits and max brightness up to 1200 nits.

Cameras - The Iphone 14 and 14 Plus feature the same camera system with two cameras (one front-facing camera {12MP F/1.5} and an ultra-wide camera {12MP f/2,4} cameras with the wide and front cameras having a faster aperture than the Iphone 13. The front facing camera also has auto-focus for the first time. The camera app contains Cinematic Mode which allows users to rack focus between subjects and create(simulate) shallow depth of field using software algorithms. It is supported on wide and front facing cameras in 4k at 30fps.

Battery - The Iphone 14 has a battery capacity of 3729mAh and provides 20 hours of video playback. The 14 Plus has a battery capacity of 4325mAh. Both specs support wireless charging of 7.5W, fast charging option(20W) and Mag Safe wireless charging (15W).

Wi-Fi -Apple's new emergency SOS via satelite services for Iphone 14 and 14 Pro models uses the spectrums in L and S bands designated for mobile satelite services by ITU Radio regulations. When an Iphone user makes an emergency SOS via satelite request, the message is received by an orbiting satelite operated by Global Star. The satelite then sends message down to ground stations located across the globe. As of November 2022, Global Star operates a constellation of 24 satelites in low earth orbit with plans to enhance this in the future via its partnership with Apple. The service became available to the general public on November 15 2022. On the same day, Apple announced that it will be extended to France, Germany, Ireland and the UK in December 2022.

Iphone 14 Pro and Pro Max 




     The Iphone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are Apple's flagship smartphones for the year 2022. They are also the first Iphones to have a new type of display cutout called "Dynamic Island" replacing the notch that has been in use since the Iphone X was introduced in 2017. Along with the Iphone 14 and 14 Pro models add satelite to contact emergency services when out of range of Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Iphone 14 Pro and Pro Max models (as well as the Iphone 14 and 14 Plus) sold in the United States dropped support for physical sim cards making them the first Iphone models since the CDMA variant of the Iphone 4 to not come with a discrete SIM card reader.

Design - The Iphone 14 and 14 Pro Max are available in four colors: Silver, Space Black, Gold and Deep Purple. Deep Purple is a new color replacing Sierra Blue used on the Iphone 13 Pro and Pro Max. 

Hardware - The Iphone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max feature a new A16 Bionic system on a chip(SoC) built on TSMC's N4 fabrication process superseeding the A15 Bionic seen on the Iphone 13 and 13 Pro lineup. the 3rd generation Iphone SE and the Iphone 14 and 14 Plus. 

Camera - The camera sensors and lenses have been upgraded this year for the main camera and ultrawide camera. The main camera features a new 48 mega pixel quad-pixel sensor that is 65% larger than the one on the Iphone 13 Pro. The ultrawide camera features a new larger 12MP sensor that has 100% focus pixels. The lens has also been improved for optical clarity and features a larger aperture. Apple now uses a new "photonic engine" for better image and video quality and for video, it now has a video stabilization feature called "Action Mode". The "True Depth" camera now has autofocus and a larger aperture. It has gained the ability to focus on multiple subjects at once.

Display - The Iphone 14 and 14 Pro Max has a Super Retina XDR OLED display with a maximum brightness of 1000 nits(typical) and peak brightness of 2000 nits (outdoor). The display also has refresh rate of 120Hz with LTPO technology. The Iphone 14 Pro has a resolution of 2556x1179 pixels at 460ppi while the Pro Max variant has a resolution of 2796x1290 pixels at 460ppi. They have a fingerprint resistant resistant oleophobic coating with support for display of multiple languages and characters for multiple languages and characters simultaneously. Both variants also support the "always-on-display" feature. The adaptive 120Hz refresh rate can reduce down to 1Hz to save battery whilst on "Always on Mode". The tab shaped "notch" containing the front-facing camera has been replaced by two rounded cut-outs slightly detached from the top of the screen in software, they are camouflaged by a black rounded rectangle via the "Dynamic Island" feature.

Battery - The Iphone 14 Pro has a 3200mAh battery that provides 23 hours of video playback and 20 hours of streaming video playback. The Pro Max variant has a 4323mAh battery that provides 29 hours of video playback and 25 hours of streaming video playback.

Software - Like the Iphone 14 and 14 Plus, the 14 Pro and Pro Max ship with IOS 16. IOS 16 on the Iphone 14 Pro suggests a feature known as "Dynamic Island" which displays hardware and system level notifications, media playback data and other app-specific "live activities" as indicators on either side of the camera and sensor cut-outs. They are rendered on a black-rounded rectangle, providing the illusion that the cut-out is expanding and contracting. For example, notification for incoming calls in a banner that stretches out horizontally from the sensors with Face ID indicators drop down vertically from the sensor cutout rather than appearing in the center of displays as of previous models. The Dynamic Island can also be tapped to view additional details for example ongoing activities like maps, direction or sports scores can also be expanded by tapping and holding the area. These are the first ever Iphones to have always-on display when it is on, the lockscreen dims down to a very low level and drops to 1 Hz.

          The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are a pair of android smartphones designed, developed and marketed by Google as part of the Google Pixel product line.
