Solana Mobile: The Web3 Smartphone Saga
If you are told to mention smartphones that exist today, what are the first brands that come to your mind. Probably Google's Pixel, Apple's Iphone, Samsung's Galaxy. The general concept of a smartphone in the common mind is a device that runs on either Android or IOS. But what if you were told that there is a smartphone device that is built on the blockchain along with a mobile platform. Mind blowing right? As crazy as it sounds, there is a company that is building a smartphone that is based on the Solana blockchain. So we will talk about the hardware and software features of the phone.
The company, Solana Mobile is a subsidiary of Solana Labs, a Web 3 based company. The OV1 smartphone will be a niche that is the first ever smartphone to be built on a Web 3 based framework. It was originally built by a team of engineers at OSOM, a privacy oriented tech company but then it was converted to the Saga and then owned by Solana Mobile. The Solana Saga will be built with Solana's blockchain and it will be capable of executing transactions in Web 3. It will also HODL digital assets including tokens and NFTs. Some amazing specs about this phone have been revealed on Solana's official page. So far, we know that it has a 6.67-inch OLED screen, 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. The Saga will also equip the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and it is powered by a 4100 mAh battery. There is also wireless charging support, Bluetooth 5.0 and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. In the camera department, there's a 16MP selfie camera and dual main cameras. The first is a 50MP IMX766 f/1.8 and a secondary 12MP IMX373 f/2.2 120-degree ultra wide camera. Interestingly, prospective buyers can pre-order a Solana Saga starting today for a refundable deposit of $100. The Saga will retail for $1000 and those who pre-order may receive a Saga pass that includes an accompanying NFT and "the first ticket to influencing the direction of the SMS platform". In case you are interested in a pre-order, visit stor The device is expected to arrive in early 2023 and will initially launch in the US, Canada, EU and UK.
Also in NYC, Solana Labs also launched the Solana Mobile Stack Software ecosystem for Android along with an upcoming Android smartphone called Saga. Solana Mobile Stack (SMS) is an open source software kit designed to enable the development of native Android apps built around the Solana blockchain. The kit includes the Mobile Wallet Adapter, a protocol for playing in mobile Solana wallets. According to the firm, this feature will work on all mobile devices not just Android ones. Another new feature called Seed Vault is a software custody solution that keeps private keys and seed phrases( essentially the passwords that unlock the crypto funds) and other sensitive information secure on an Android device. Lastly, SMS includes Solana Pay for Android which enables mobile payments via the platform. Solana Labs will also launch a new Solana Dapp store designed for mobile devices providing easy access to Web 3 applications and wallets built on Solana without fees. The SMS Developer kit is available for download on the Android and IOS store.
According to the firm, the Solana Mobile Stack will enable new functionality such as minting (i.e creation and distribution of NFT assets from anywhere, easier mobile transactions on Solana, wider-spread access to Solana's De-fi protocols and other options to play Solana's based Web 3 video games. Solana's mobile phone Saga will have a "secure element" hardware module to empower the Seed Vault feature and keep users' private information protected from exploits and attacks. As part of the Solana Mobile Stack Launch, the Solana Foundation will establish a $10 million developer ecosystem funds to provide grants to mobile creators. "Developers can now bring the power of Solana to the computers in our pockets, not just our backpacks," said Solana co-founder Raj Gokal in a release "Solana can revolutionize so much of what we do everyday, but we need to open the possibilities for decentralized apps on our mobile devices in order for this potential to be realized". So as a whole, Solana are doing a growth deal in contributing to the growth of Web 3 and the decentralization of the global community. You can watch the whole unveiling event down here:
